Bitcoin mining energy consumption dataBitcoin mining became 53.17% more efficient and 59.78% more sustainable in 2021The Bitcoin Mining Council released its latest report on Bitcoin’s energy usage and mixAbout the report and data collection methodsThe Bitcoin Mining Council is committed to releasing quarterly reports breaking down data about Bitcoin mining energy usage and mix. This is their third release, covering Q4 2021.On December 31, 2021 — the last day the report covers — , the Bitcoin Mining Council was composed of 36 Bitcoin mining organizations, representing 46% of the total Bitcoin hashrate. The report is based on information collected from a survey answered by the Bitcoin Mining Council members, asking them three questions:How much electricity does your total Bitcoin mining fleet consume? What is the total percentage of sustainable electricity within your fleet’s power generation mix? What is the total aggregate hashrate of your fleet? It’s also worth mentioning that, for this release, the Bitcoin Mining Council has excluded renewable energy credits (REC) from the “sustainable power” definition. All reports from now on will follow the same methodology.Bitcoin mining’s total energy useThe Bitcoin Mining Council’s findings estimate that Bitcoin mining consumes a total of 220 TWh worldwide. This represents a 17% increase from October 2021, when the previous report was released.Bitcoin’s energy usage represents 0.14% of the world’s total energy production and 0.44% of the global wasted energy due to inefficiencies. A still negligible number despite the increase.More importantly, since then, the total Bitcoin hashrate increased from 140 EH/s to 192 EH/s — a 37% growth. This is positive news, as it means new hashrate coming online is more energy-efficient.Bitcoin mining energy consumption comparedTo put things into perspective, the report compares Bitcoin’s energy consumption to that of the entire world and some countries individually. Data from the countries’ energy usage was taken from BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy. Moreover, when looking at the electricity consumption of other industries and activities, Bitcoin mining’s usage becomes even more inconsequential.
